A project to save the endangered Southern Ground-Hornbills began at Mabula
outside Bela-Bela in the Limpopo province of South Africa a few years ago.
The nearby Haenertsburg area once had an abundance of these peace loving and
large colourful birds, but farmers shot them until only one female remained.
At the request of Haenertsburg born Julie McMahon, Mabula introduced a young
hand reared male into the area called Punda Maria. This is Punda's diary of
his life within the Haenertsburg community.
